Iowa Communities Invited to Apply for 2026 First Impressions Program

Posted 27 January, 2026
For small Iowa communities, the first impression a visitor gets can shape whether they return. The First Impressions Tourism and Community Assessment program is now accepting applications through 4 p.m. Feb. 18.

The program is led by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s Community and Economic Development unit in partnership with the Iowa Economic Development Authority and the Iowa Tourism Office. It gives towns a chance to see themselves the way visitors do. From signage to hospitality, an outside perspective can reveal opportunities for growth that locals may overlook. Five communities will be selected for the 2026 program year.

“Communities often find that even small changes make a big difference in how welcoming they feel to newcomers,” said Ann Vogelbacher, community and economic development extension specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “First Impressions helps leaders identify those opportunities and take action.”

Each participating community goes through a structured process that includes advance research and unannounced visits by a trained assessment team. Findings are compiled into a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations. The report is then shared in a public forum to spark discussion among residents and local leaders.

Communities with populations of 20,000 or fewer are eligible to apply. Program information, responsibilities, fees and the application form are available on the First Impressions webpage.
